Charles was cycling in the annual London to Brighton Cycle Ride when he fell from his bike sustaining an injury to his head. He was admitted to Hospital in London. Despite initially making a good recovery, Charles was accidentally started on inappropriate blood thinning medication by the doctor treating him. This resulted in a catastrophic brain haemorrhage at the site of his initial injury. As a consequence, he sustained brain damage of the utmost severity and now requires 24-hour care.
Shirley contracted mesothelioma through the washing of her stepfather’s clothes. He worked at Devonport Dockyard and then at the Royal Naval Hospital in Plymouth, and when he came home from work Shirley would shake out his overalls before washing them. The asbestos dust from the overalls would be inhaled by Shirley for many years.
Ben was navigating a power boat being driven by a 10 year old with limited racing experience when his boat ‘hooked’ as the young driver tried to make the first turn on the course, causing the boat to come to a complete halt. A boat directly behind Ben’s – again being driven by an inexperienced youngster, aged 11 years - ploughed into the port side of Ben’s boat, striking him hard on the head and fracturing his skull.
David was working in a team collecting advertising signs to store them for the winter. The signs he was sitting on became unstable and flew upwards. David was thrown to the ground and, as a result, he suffered multiple catastrophic injuries including a severe and permanent disabling brain injury.
