Novum Law’s specialist asbestos disease team has secured nearly £150,000 compensation for the wife of a man diagnosed with the fatal asbestos-related cancer, mesothelioma. He was exposed to deadly asbestos as an engineer in the Merchant Navy in the 1960s.
Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that can take many years to develop and is caused by exposure to asbestos. It mainly affects the lining of the lungs, but it can also affect the stomach lining.
The man (Mr B) first contacted specialist asbestos disease lawyer Brigit Nolan from our Plymouth team following his diagnosis with mesothelioma in April 2020.
Exposure to asbestos in the Merchant Navy
Mr B explained he had been exposed to asbestos when he was an engineer in the Merchant Navy. He had worked onboard ships in pump rooms, boiler rooms, and tanks from the mid-1960s to 1970, where asbestos was widely used for insulation and heat protection purposes.
Unfortunately, at this time, employers didn’t warn staff about the dangers of asbestos, provide adequate training or give employees personal protective equipment, such as masks.
As an engineer, it was Mr B’s job to ensure that the ships’ systems were working efficiently and to carry out repair work where necessary. For example, when fixing leaking pipes, he would knock off asbestos lagging to access the pipework and then repair the pipe and re-lag the repaired pipes with asbestos.

We got in touch with our contact in the marine claims industry. They assisted us in successfully locating ‘offshore’ insurance policies for the companies that had employed Mr B during his career in the Merchant Navy.
Sadly, Mr B passed away in May 2020, but his claim was able to continue in his wife’s name. As his wife (Mrs B) doesn’t have a computer, everything was communicated by mail and over the phone. A settlement was agreed upon in November 2021 for nearly £150K.
