Novum Law’s specialist asbestos disease solicitors have secured a significant settlement for a woman diagnosed with the fatal asbestos-related cancer, mesothelioma. She was exposed to deadly asbestos dust at the Cape Asbestos factory in Barking, East London several decades ago.
The woman (Mrs C), who now lives in the South West of England, got in touch with our expert asbestos and mesothelioma team after she received her devastating diagnosis in 2020.
Mrs C used to visit the Cape Asbestos factory on Harts Lane in Barking to play badminton with her husband and compete in tournaments.
Her matches would take place in the factory’s canteen and Mrs C remembers there was always a lot of asbestos dust around the site. In fact, the area where the badminton games took place always had to be swept out thoroughly beforehand, but it was always dusty. Inevitably, this would be breathed in by those in and around the plant.
The Cape Asbestos factory was involved in the large scale manufacture of asbestos products, such as fire-proof insulation, partitioning and roofing, made from asbestos mined in South Africa.
The notorious seven-acre asbestos plant closed down in 1969, but tragically it exposed thousands of people, including workers, family members and neighbours to the potentially cancer-causing material.
As a result, Barking has been identified as one of London’s biggest asbestos death blackspots with one local newspaper, describing how it contaminated “unprotected workmen, wives who washed their overalls, and children from Northbury School who played with the asbestos ‘snow’ spewed from its giant fans.”
Novum Law’s specialist asbestos team meticulously investigated the places where Mrs C had worked and lived, and looking at the likely places where she would have been exposed to asbestos dust.
Mrs C had spent the majority of her employment in the medical profession and couldn’t recall being exposed to asbestos dust during her career. But when she mentioned her badminton games at the Cape Asbestos plant, the team knew this was where she was tragically exposed to deadly asbestos dust and fibres.
Novum Law’s team immediately started negotiations with the company to make a mesothelioma compensation claim.
A sizeable settlement was secured and Mrs C was delighted with her mesothelioma claim. It provides her with financial security in her lifetime, giving her much-needed peace of mind knowing that she has the money available for any future expenses she incurs due to her illness.
