Mesothelioma can cause financial stress

It has been reported that those families who are suddenly affected by mesothelioma may also suffer increased financial stress. The financial strain of suffering from a serious cancer diagnosis can cause additional stress which can affect the patient’s health. Recent research has reportedly shown that cancer patients with limited savings are more likely to experience worse symptoms and a lower quality of life.

In February 2016, it is reported that the Journal of Clinical Oncology published a study looking in to how financial strain could effect the symptoms and quality of life for people diagnosed with lung or colon cancer. Some of the problems observed in patients who had limited savings included impaired activity levels, increased pain, deeper depression and worse overall health.

Andrew Stinchcombe of Novum Law comments “ the diagnosis of asbestos related mesothelioma or lung cancer will already be a devastating blow to a family. Having to worry about financial issues as well will only add extra strain. Fortunately, there will often be state benefits available to such sufferers in the UK and it is important that asbestos victims ensure that they are claiming all of the benefits to which they are entitled. A further claim for compensation may also be a possibility and although this will not in itself be able to restore a persons health, it can at least provide some financial security for the asbestos sufferer and their family”.
