How genetics affect mesothelioma

  • Posted

It has been reported that generic factors can play a part in determining who develops the asbestos related disease of mesothelioma. Although large numbers of people may have been exposed to asbestos in different  ways, not all of these people will go on to develop mesothelioma. It has been reported that scientists believe that the susceptibility to mesothelioma is due to mutations of a specific gene.

The BAP1 gene is linked not only to mesothelioma but also to other forms of cancer. Researchers noticed that those people with family histories of mesothelioma had mutations in this generic area.

It is also reported that one possibility for early detection and treatment of mesothelioma is gene therapy. Much more research however is required to determine how safe this therapy may be, and whether it could be effective in the future. To read the full article, click here.
