Boxer in an induced coma following bleed on the brain

Brain Injury is not usually the first thing that comes to mind when you think about sporting injuries, however due to the nature of boxing they are not uncommon. John Hardy a leading neuroscientist describes the sport it as “little more than a session of mutual brain injury”.

Nick Blackwell was up against Chris Eubank Jr this weekend, and all are hoping that this match won’t be his last. In the tenth round, the match was stopped after the ringside doctor advised the Referee that Blackwell’s swollen eye meant he was unable to continue. The boxer was found to have a small brain bleed and has since been in an induced coma.

My team here at Novum have years of experience handling brain injuries. We know how these types of injuries can develop and what effects they can bring.

When an individual sustains a brain injury, whether that be through a severe blow to the head or from suffering a stroke, the consequences can be devastating. An injury to the brain can completely change a person. They can become a shadow of their former self and experience such drastic personality changes that their whole life needs readjusting.

We work with clients whose brain injuries have left them in critical condition and we work closely with support teams and medical experts to ensure that our clients have the best chances of making a good recovery.

The brain is such a fragile organ that the slightest injury can have the most dramatic effect. When someone suffers from a bleed on the brain, it often leads to further medical problems, both with the brain and the rest of the body.

No-one could have known what would unravel after the fight was stopped but had it gone on much longer Nick could have been left in a much worse condition. It appears that he is making a steady recovery and are hopeful that he continues to do so.
